Hurricanes a Time for Self Improvement

Hurricanes a Time for Self Improvement
By Lance Winslow

Have you ever noticed that some people make excuse after excuse of why they cannot accomplish a task or finish a goal that they have previously set? Have you ever wondered why some people who have all the tools they need are the ones that make the most excuses, while those that have little or nothing never make excuses and always seem to get the job done; why is that?

Why I have heard a lot of excuses in my day and in business we sure hear a lot of excuses every time we turn around. Now consider yourself lucky for moment, while we discuss those that are less fortunate, for instance those that have lost everything during the 2005 Atlantic tropical hurricane season along the Gulf Coast of the United States of America.

Certainly those people have a reason to make an excuse and the rest of us, why I just can't imagine what kind of excuse we could possibly come up with that can match what those people went through when they lost everything; Can you?

If you have a better excuse than those people who went through one of the worst hurricane disasters ever to hit our country then I would sure like to hear it. Hurricanes are a time for self-improvement and there is nothing you cannot do if you put your mind to it. Those people who lost everything during the catastrophic hurricane are rebuilding their lives because they have to and they know there is no excuse they must do what they have to do.

Now look in the mirror and think to yourself all the things that you should do but are currently making excuses for. Why not get busy and do something useful to help with your plan for self-improvement. Consider this in 2006.

Improvement Planning for Taking Charge of Change

Improvement Planning for Taking Charge of Change
By Jim Clemmer

He who is not prepared today, will be less so tomorrow. Ovid, Roman poet

Effective learning and capability development doesn't happen just because we want it to. For example, empowering without enabling isn't just foolish it's unethical. It's like putting a complete novice at the controls of a clunky old airplane and empowering him or her to land in the middle of a ferocious thunderstorm. If our organization's systems don't work well, if our skill levels aren't strong, if processes are out of control, if measurements are giving incomplete or false feedback, if communication channels are crossed, or if reward and recognition practices are unaligned, the clearest focus, strongest context, and best of intentions will be wasted.

What's needed is disciplined, rigorous improvement planning. Few things are more strategic than organizational capabilities. Competitors can match or trump capital investments, marketing campaigns, or new products and services. But few competitors have the foresight, discipline, and skill to build a strong and constantly improving organization. By building a highly capable organization one that's continually learning, growing, and developing we develop an unmatched competitive advantage. We will be able to move quickly to minimize the threats and capitalize on the opportunities change throws at us. Well be in a position to start creating that change.

Continually improving our capabilities calls for coordination and planning. Of course, the goal of planning isn't plans, but action. However, before acting, we need to ensure we're acting on the right things. We need to find the leverage points that will give us the biggest payoffs. We must coordinate improvement activities so everyone's not heading off in all directions at once. We need to ensure everybody sees and acts according to the bigger organizational picture. In other words, we need an improvement plan.

Tailoring Our Improvement Process

They know enough who know how to learn. Henry Brooks Adams, 19th century American historian

A dim-witted man went to a lazy tailor for a new suit. The first day he wore it, a friend pointed out that right sleeve was far too short. So he went back to the lazy tailor. The tailor said, Oh, it doesn't need alteration. Just raise your right shoulder, and then pull and hold the sleeve with that hand. The dim-witted man did as he was instructed although it caused him to hunch over and walk with a lurch. As he left the tailor shop, he met another friend.

How do you like my new suit? he asked. Very nice, the friend replied. But, you know, I think you're left pant leg is awfully short. So the dim-witted man headed back to the tailor shop. Oh, that's because when you lean over to hold up your right sleeve, you pull up your left pant leg. What you need to do is bend your left leg just enough for your pant cuff to reach the top of your shoe. As the man hobbled down the street toward his office he passed in front of two diners at a sidewalk cafe. Look at that poor man, one diner said to her companion. I wonder what happened to him? I don't know, was the reply. But isn't it amazing how well his suit fits.

We need to beware of pat formulas or off-the-shelf improvement packages. Improvement tools, techniques, and approaches must be customized to fit our unique personal, team, and organizational circumstances. That's why trendy programs like quality circles, excellence, customer service, quality improvement, teams, empowerment, reengineering and the like have failed or fallen short in so many organizations. They're often sold as a one-size fits all, step-by-step process that we can drop right into our organization. When that doesn't work, some managers or consultants try to alter the organization to fit the program rather than the other way around.

SelfImprovement Patterns of Jesus: 12 Secrets to Revolutionize Your Life Part II

Self-Improvement Patterns of Jesus: 12 Secrets to Revolutionize Your Life - Part II
By Paul Davis

Jesus of Nazareth was perhaps the greatest and most influential communicator of all time. His manner of living was purposeful, powerful and pragmatic.

How can we model Jesus and implement His proven techniques in our own lives?

Here are 12 secrets to unlock your hidden potential, revolutionize your life and get you moving in victory en route to fulfilling your dreams.

Today we pick up where we left off from Part I.

5.Be Powerful in Speech.

Jesus knew how to fit and frame His words. His words were both spirit and life to the people. (John 6:63) Unlike others, Jesus spoke with great authority (Matthew 7:29). Because He spoke the Word of God, the life of our Creator flowed forth in His speech. His speech therefore quickly distinguished Him and differentiated Him from the rest of the scribes stuck in dead religion and ritual.

Because the people happily responded to the gracious words of Jesus, the religious rulers became both jealous and fearful. They felt Jesus might infringe on their market niche in the religious world and empty their synagogues as the people began following Jesus by the multitudes.

Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. (Matthew 22:15)

In a final and pathetic attempt to discredit Christ, the scribes and Pharisees sought to ask Jesus questions to trip Him up and entangle Him in His speech. Yet Christ being the Master orator in no way was snared by their evil devices. Instead His speech accurately revealed the deception of the religious rulers hearts, impure motives and nasty negativity.

The Word of God is quick and powerful, living and active, unable to be discredited by naysayers (Hebrews 4:12). Whosoever will believe it can also speak it. As you do you will sense the life of the Spirit upon you and the living words you utter. Unlike other texts and speeches, when you recite the Word of the living God, the Word will be just as alive as ever!

6.Be Purposeful in Life

Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. (John 18:37)

Jesus lived for a divne cause. He came to die for the sins of the world, to be a witness of divine truth and a bridge for all of humanity to cross over and enter into the presence of the heavenly Father.

For what purpose and cause are you living? Until you begin to live for a purpose larger than yourself, you will truly never begin to live.

7.Successfully Conquer Conflict

And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way. (Luke 4:28-30)

When they religious leaders angrily tried to remove Him from the city and then aggressively kill Christ, He wisely and gently removed Himself from their midst. Yet Jesus never cowered to them. He walked right through them.

Such a boldness and humility coupled together enabled Christ Jesus to successfully conquer many conflicts. When necessary He would speak up and tell the religious leaders the facts of life.

Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. (John 8:43-44)

Jesus did not tolerate the arrogance of dead religious leaders. Yet some He knew would turn from their wicked way and believe the truth of the gospel. So Jesus wisely navigated through each situation with accuracy, care and precision. In this Jesus proved to be the ultimate mediator between God and man, upholding truth and silencing Himself when His words alone could not turn wayward hearts.

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. (1Timothy 2:5)

The Manifesting Mindset for Self Improvement

The Manifesting Mindset for Self Improvement
By Bill Boyd

For years we have been exposed to self help and motivational instruction that focuses heavily on the physical world. For some this has been highly effective while for others this hasnt always been the case. Why is that? I believe that success comes to those who have the manifesting mindset.

What is the manifesting mindset? Its simply thinking in a way that is in harmony with the universe.I know that sounds spiritual, well it is. The reason some people seem to get everything they want and have abundant success is mainly due to their Manifesting Mindset.

If we have a subconscious belief that, for example: Wealth is good and rich people are happy, than your mind will allow you to manifest that wealth. However, if you have subconscious thoughts that are negative towards the attainment of wealth, than you will vibrate an energy that will not attract wealth.Have you or anyone you have known ever had a successful business or made a lot of money, and then after a period of time, lost it all or in part?

Or how about; if you have had some business success or other personal achievements and caught yourself say something like Im so lucky or I cant believe Im doing this, and then had a turn around in your luck or your achievements?

Those are examples of subconscious thoughts that are sabotaging your chances of maintaining your success.

Another example of the Manifesting Mindset at work is trying to solve problems; Manifesting Mindset techniques teach you how to solve problems in your sleep. It isnt a new concept that if you focus too much on a problem with your conscious mind you will never find the best answer, but if you allow yourself to sleep on itIt will often come to you as an epiphany!

Then theres daydreaming, how many great ideas have come to you when you relax your mind and allow your thoughts to wonder around the universe, and suddenly you realize that you have just solved a problem that has been bugging you for years? Now thats being in harmony with the universe.

Heres one of my favorite thoughts:Its about great inventions.Do people invent things, or just understand the powers of energy in the universe?

Thomas Edison; light bulb, Alexander Graham Bell; telephoneIt was always POSSIBLE to have a light bulb even before Edison UNDERSTOOD how to make one! After he made one, it soon became one of the most common items in the world! Now everyone uses the light bulb. Imagine trying to explain a light bulb and convince someone that it works before Edison made one.

The same is true with the Manifesting Mindset; we are only now beginning to understand and harness the energy that makes up our universe, and while there is undoubtedly much more for us to learn, one thing is for sure, knowledge is power and understanding the Manifesting Mindset will allow you to achieve all that you truly deserve.

The Memory Improvement System

The Memory Improvement System
By Adam Eason

I have previously touched on the subject on enhancing memory by paying more attention to how we encoded information and experience. Here, I want to move on to how we retrieve information to enhance our memory. To heighten your awareness of your own memory improvement system.

Last week I spoke about encoding information better so that we can access it more readily when required to do so. Encoding information with your own memory improvement system of course means processing it internally; and internal processing involves your senses. A number of things emerge from this:

1. We tend to find it easier to remember using certain preferred senses. So if you are strongly visual, make sure when you are being introduced to someone new that you take a mental picture of their face and perhaps see their name on their forehead, or like a badge or necklace close to their face. If you know you find it easy to remember sounds, hear the sound of them saying their name and make sure you record it internally alongside their image, so that when you see them next the visual image calls up the sound of the name. I always make a point of saying the persons name several times within the first few sentences out aloud to really get it in my mind. Looking in the appropriate direction to access the representational system you want to store the information in will help ensure you store the information in the most appropriate way too.

2. The more of your senses that are involved, the richer your internal representation and the storage will be. You can do this deliberately to help with encoding. Involve as many of your senses as possible, in order to make a memory really rich a retrievable by multiple routes. (Anything memorable about the temperature, moisture and pressure of their handshake for example)

3. Some things are best encoded using particular senses, which means attending in that system before attempting to encode anything. Consistently good spelling in English, for example, depends on visual processing. Researchers have investigated what good spellers did, and found that they all store mental pictures of how the words look. When they need to spell the word, they refer to that internal picture to get the right spelling.

People who are good at physical skills will tend to store information about them kinaesthetically, and they may not be able to explain what they do in words. I know someone who is a genius at carpentry; he does lots of work for me. When asked by his friend to explain how to use a lathe, he found that he was quite unable to explain or even remember how he did it. He had to sit down at the machine and actually work with it himself: his hands seemed to know what to do.

When developing your own memory improvement system, you can develop a facility with any of your senses if you practise. This can seem remarkable to others who have not bothered to do so. And this is true of entire cultures as well. Any culture reliant on oral transmission, for instance, will have highly developed auditory memory strategies such as rhythm, rhyme and mnemonics. So while it seems amazing to us, it was perfectly natural in ancient Greece for epic poems thousands of lines long to be committed to memory and accurately recited. Such skills still exist in parts of Africa where literacy and computer ownership are low, and also in India.

Conversely, imagine how strange it would be trying to learn a dance by reading a book about it, or learning to sing by looking at pictures of people singing. You need the right tool for the job. So check if you have the right senses alerted for what you want to learn.

Before I go further, here is a little quiz, to help you find out more about your own memory:

Exploring Your Memory:

- Get really curious about your memory. What do you find easy to remember? What do you tend to forget? Do your own patterns tell you anything about what is important to you and what is less so? Or what kinds of representation come most naturally and you store most easily? Or where your self-limiting beliefs are?

- Find out how you go about remembering. Do you: make pictures of the information? Tell yourself stories? Hear someone telling you? Try it on and experience? Like to get your hands dirty?

- What has to happen for you to forget something? Does your mind Just go blank? Do you steer away from something and find yourself thinking of something else? Do you say to yourself, I must not forget this in which case your wording itself is directing your attention to forgetting rather than remembering. Remember this is far more progressive by the way.

- How do your remembering and forgetting relate to your interest in the information and your feelings about it?

- What kind of things do you have a poor memory for, and why?

- Do you have a good memory for things you would rather not? I knew someone who easily remembered everything that went wrong and every time he was ridiculed by others. If you do, how are you encoding these experiences? Are you replaying a video? Listening to a tape? Feeling the feelings? See if you can pinpoint how you are doing this.

So let's get on to the subject of memory retrieval.

Encoding and retrieval are closely linked. Bruce Chatwin recounts a really good example of how the two processes interact in his book The Songlines. Visiting Australia, Chatwin learnt how the Aboriginal culture and history was encoded and passed on through songs that related to invisible paths winding across the land- the Songlines. So the land itself and all its natural features, every hump and hillock, encoded the stories of the ancient Dreamtime from generation to generation.

The Aborigines sing their Songlines as a series of couplets that match the length of time it takes to walk a particular stretch of land. So the land and song are one. In fact, according to Chatwin, they believe that they are singing the land into existence as they walk over it, in a wondrous mixture of geography and mythology. Each tribe has its own territory and Songline, and each knows about the history of its neighbour because of the way their Songlines interlink.

While travelling in the back country, Chatwin gave a lift to a man called Limpy, who wanted to visit a place he had never been to, which was of immense importance on his Songline. After seven hours driving, and about ten miles away from the valley, Limpy began muttering and gesticulating rapidly as he stared out of the window. He had begun to recognise places he had only previously heard about, and he was singing the Songline to himself. But he was forced to do this in great haste because of the speed of the car: the Songline he knew went at walking speed.

The Songline had been encoded through singing and walking through a landscape with close attention to detail, and in a linear sequence. Every note of the melody was linked to a feature of the landscape, and this made remembering the Songline and passing it to all tribe members and down generations much easier.

When the car journey intersected with the Songline, Limpys memory of the whole Songline was triggered, but where the man-made road deviated from the Songline Limpy switched off and only resumed the experience when the road met the line again.

A somewhat similar process was used by Roman orators when they memorised complex speeches. They would mentally link each heading of their speech in its correct sequence with the features of another sequence they already knew well such as the landmarks of a particular building or route. By linking the sequencing of the newly created speech to a sequence they already knew, they highjacked an existing memory to help them remember the new speech.

If you want to use this pattern to help remember a story, or a presentation, think of a route you know really well. Take yourself along it in your mind, stopping at each major landmark and finding ways to link the sequence of the headings in your story or presentation with the sequence of landmarks. Inventing links will help you create the links you need, and the more ridiculous or vivid the links the easier you will find them to remember.

Going Carless For A Day Can Improve Your Time Management & Save Fuel!

Going Car-less For A Day Can Improve Your Time Management & Save Fuel!
By Dr. Gary S. Goodman

When the price of gas is going higher and higher, apart from fully inflating our tires, carpooling, and not putting the pedal to the metal, what else can we do to save energy, while becoming more efficient with regard to our own time management?

Well, let me tell your about yesterday, which was Car-less Tuesday.

All of my work was done by phone and email, I used my own small assortment of exercise equipment instead of trekking to the Y, and my SUV stayed in the driveway.

Considering it was a scortcher outside, I saved more than a regular days worth of gas. I would have blasted the air conditioning, cutting my economy by at least a third, had I ventured out.

Today, when I got back out and onto the road, along with a passenger, I was more efficient than ever, planning my driving around various errands we had to do and appointments we needed to have, in and around the Los Angeles area.

Is there a way that you could park your car for one day in five, or at least one day in seven?

It would save you money, wear and tear on the car, on you, and it would make you a better time manager, probably on the day before going car-less, as well as on the day after.

Speaking of gas mileage, Im somewhat surprised that folks who are driving tiny cars, all by themselves, are posturing as fuel economy heroes.

If there are two riders in that hulking SUV in the next lane, the Passenger Mile Per Gallon rating of that beast is probably 30 miles per gallon; fully 20% more efficient than the smaller vehicle with only one occupant.

Moreover, by ride sharing less space is taken up on freeways and surface streets, lessening congestion, and saving time for everybody.

Anyway, suffice it to say there are several ways to manage the clock and to economize, but lets not forget the obvious one; parking that car of yours, large or small, for one day per week!

The No.1 SelfImprovement Tip Your Thought Machine

The No.1 Self-Improvement Tip Your Thought Machine
By James Traverse

The best self-improvement tip is to know the make up of your thoughts and emotions that make up your mind.

Let me explain.

Complex structures evolve out of simpler ones.

You probably have had the experience of listening to music with a set of headphones and adjusting the balance so that the sound seems to appear inside your head that is a standing wave. The balanced interaction of the two waves from the left and right channels of your music player forms the standing wave within your brain. Thus something new, like a new more complex dimension, comes out of the balanced interaction of the two simple waves.

Your thoughts are formed in a similar way. Thoughts are new, more complex wave-forms that come out of the balanced interaction of the wave activity within your brain.

Dr. Karl Pribram and others have demonstrated that your brain activity is like 3D images called holograms. Each of your thoughts come out of the balanced inteaction of opposing waves within the fluids of your brain. These waves are caused by vibrations of your brains nerve endings that are stimulated by existing information as your memories, by new information as sensations through your senses, and by combinations of these.

The saying, as above so below; as within so without applies to your brains. Dr. Michael Gershon discovered that you have another brain in your belly. It is similar to the one in your head, yet smaller and very powerful.

You think more with your head and you feel more with your body, so your thoughts are associated more with your head and your emotions are associated more with your body.

Your emotions are formed in the same way as your thoughts. Emotions are new waves that come out of the balanced interaction of the wave activity within your brains.

Your body is an interconnected whole and your two brains are directly connected via your vagus nerve. The wave interaction of the thoughts and emotions of both sides of your brains above and below forms a standing wave, or new, more complex dimension, called your mind.

In the same way that a hologram is like a 3D image of a still photograph, a standing wave is like a 3D motion picture. The difference is the new dimension of the continuous motion of standing waves. And a thought or an emotion is like a hologram whereas your mind is like a standing wave.

What does this have to do with self-improvement?

You are the conductor of your mind-body and like any engineer you are most effective when you know the workings of your machine.

Now that you know how your mind comes out of coupling of waves within your brain you know more about it and you can be a better conductor. This means that you can rebuild your thought machine at the root level by erasing waves of negative memories and feelings and replace them with positive waves that enhance your self-improvement.

See it. Feel it. Achieve it. James Traverse is the author of the website and success system Mind~Power~Yoga http://www.mindpoweryoga.com

Hypnosis In The Improvement Of The Quality of Life In Cancer Suffers

Hypnosis In The Improvement Of The Quality of Life In Cancer Suffers
By Rick Collingwood

Between July 2005 and September 2005, nine cancer afflicted volunteers were admitted for a clinical trial to assess any improvements in the quality of life with the use of (non Ericksonian) hypnosis. Six 20 minute sessions were conducted on each subject, over a six week period at the frequency of once a week.

The 9 participants were both male and female aged between 38 and 76 years of age. No pre-trial treatment protocols were changed, and all of the participants were required to be admitted by and continue there usual standard of care medical curative and palliative therapies under the direction and supervision of their General Practitioners or Oncologists. The subjects presented with various cancers at various stages of progression or stabilisation including; Stomach cancer. Bowel cancer, Lung cancer, Breast cancer, Prostate cancer, and Bone Cancer.

The intention of the study was to evaluate any improvements in Insomnia, Depression, Pain, Energy, and general quality of life. The results were extremely encouraging and reduced most of the negative side effects of other treatments and general well being between 60 to 100%.

The most significant improvements were seen in Nausea (reduced 100%) Emotional Functioning (improved 70%) Insomnia (improved 75%) Appetite (improved 55%) General Wellbeing (improved 65%)Because of the promising results in 2006 a much larger clinical will be conducted in Perth Western Australia using the same protocols.Full clinical results of the trial can be viewed at www.mindmotivations.com.

SelfImprovement: Coax your Dreams into Reality with a Single Spark of Core Desire

Self-Improvement: Coax your Dreams into Reality with a Single Spark of Core Desire
By Mary Murtha

Ever since we are a little kid in school and witnessed the world outside of our homes, our little minds are already working up plans. Indeed, even small children are capable of thinking up plans for their life. In their own childish worlds, they already have a burning desire to do something.

They may not yet fully grasp every plan and dream they wish to attain. Still, it boosts their self-image. Their self-esteem may also be elevated much with these dreams, giving them the courage to confront a school bully.

As the years go by, children become adolescents and then, adults. Every stage of their life is, like a little child, still full of plans and dreams. Others may have fulfilled theirs while others are still seeking of ways to achieve theirs.

Meanwhile, there are also people who seem to have their head full of desires and ambitions but remain just that. What do we make of these people? Are you one of them?

Do not lose heart or your self-image and self-esteem if ever you are one of those that cannot seem to find a way to strike the match and brighten their way into fulfilling their dreams. You might just be following the wrong dream. Or have not tapped the full wealth of your hidden potential.

Indeed, every one of us has quite an extensive hidden potential growing and developing throughout the years. Once we know of this, next thing we have to do is learn to identify and direct our hidden potential. You might discover that you are born to be a ballerina. Or that you are gifted with a talent of acting, singing or leading people. Your dream may also involve traveling the world and meeting famous and legendary personages.

However, without proper, prompt and persistent guidance and learning you cannot develop the power of motivating yourself strongly towards your dream. Motivation is the key to all self-improvement. Maybe we know exactly what we want, and the plans we have drawn for ourselves are realistic enough. Without that elemental force that drives us to strive and increase the light of our humbly lit, wish candles.

Persistence and proper action is the answer will unleash power of man to motivate him/her self. Everything we wanted out of life ever since we are little is achieved because of this powerful and vast motivation to oneself. Everything we wanted and failed to achieve are the result of the lack of proper motivation.

We may have improved, but our full-blown self-improvement is still wanting.

Do not be mistaken, though about this. If you seem lost in the silken web of dreams you spun, do not think you are not motivated. There is no person born without motivation. You just lack the proper learning and training on how to force out your specific desires, cultivate a powerful yearning, and drive to attain them. You might also lack self-esteem and your self-image is way down below.

Motivation is something we are born with. That spark in you can develop into a raging fire of determination. Just think, if other people would motivate you to achieve a certain dream, it would not have that lasting effect because other people are also touch-and-go in our lives. The motivation they can offer is limited.

Meanwhile, if you discover that faint spark in you and feed it continuously, it will spread out and consume all of you. Then and only then can you have the lasting power to get what you want out of life.

The faint spark is your core desires. They are your dreams, hopes and wishes, whipped into shape as you grow older and learn more. If we stunted our growth as a person and lost enough self-esteem, that faint spark may die and our desires may never develop into reality. If we continue feeding it by uplifting our level of awareness, self-improvement and self-image, then they are just there around the corner.

Knowing your core desires is both easy but quite complicated to do. Make a list of everything you really liked to do from the time you were a kid and until today. This list is yours alone. Do not muddle it up with what others are egging you on to or coaching you to answer. Be honest with yourself and the list you will draw up once finished will bring you full force motivation.

Take down everything you knew and learned that you really like to have. Avoid listing things that would be nice to have or do. Be brutally honest with yourself.

Do not make a mental list, write it down and you will see the difference. Once you have the list, then start figuring out ways and clear out the path into getting the core desires you want.

It will be a measure of your self-improvement once you never let go of your core desires. Your self-esteem and self-image will sustain your unwavering motivation. Let the fire of motivation keep burning in you!

Time Management At Work: Improve Your Work Performance

Time Management At Work: Improve Your Work Performance
By Carl Mueller

Time management at work is critical to your long-term career success. Time management and work performance go hand in hand because time is certainly a finite resource that we cant buy more of, as much as many of us would like to.

Some careers are simply known for being high-stress and requiring employees to work long hours. Time management at work is something we can all improve upon and one of the easiest ways to make better use of your time is to eliminate classic time wasters.

Here are some time management tips you can utilize at work:

1. Stop organizing or attending meetings that serve no real purpose.

If you have to attend the meeting, keep it on topic and ask the person calling the meeting to put a time limit on it that everyone knows about and stick to it. The worst thing is when you attend a meeting that serves no purpose that goes long.

2. Stop wasting time surfing the Internet.

How did people waste time before computers? The Internet is a great resource but it can also be a great time waster. Use the Internet for relevant work-related purposes only.

3. Stop other people from wasting your time.

If you are a nice person and people take advantage of it by dropping work on your desk that you shouldnt be doing, you are going to have to learn how to say no from time to time. If people always pop into your office to talk, shut your office door. If they dont get the hint, tell them you are busy and politely ask them to leave. Same thing with phone calls: keep them short and to the point whether you are making the call or receiving it.

4. Organize your phone calls and emails and how you respond to them.

One way to get work done is to (where possible) only answer your phone and emails at specified times rather than simply answering the phone every time it rings and responding to an email whenever one arrives. Instead, respond to phone and email messages at one time once you have completed your current tasks rather than handling them each time they occur.

5. Learn to tell the difference between necessary and unnecessary work.

Understand what work needs to be done and what can be eliminated or delegated to someone else where applicable. Look for ways to improve the way you complete work and try to automate or streamline work that you need to do regularly.

Finding Your Inner Peace Improves Life

Finding Your Inner Peace Improves Life
By Kenneth Snodin

People with pessimistic attitudes go through their lives fighting their thoughts and emotions every day. If they are rejected for a job position, they feel that they are not good enough to have any job. They start to think that everyone believes they are stupid, and the cycle of pessimism traps them into psychological immobility. In fact, everyone experiences rejection at some time during their lives, but when your mind focuses on the negative aspects of a situation, it is hard to find inner peace.

The first step in finding inner peace is to think carefully about your goals. What are you trying to achieve, and what are you doing that will take you there? Can you realistically reach your goals, or are you setting goals that are far beyond your reach? Do you have any goals? By putting your priorities in order, you will be on the path to peace because only chaos can result from clutter and disorganization of the mind. You can start by setting small goals that can be easily achieved. Then, instead of focusing on failure, you can see the good job youve done in reaching your goal. If you fail to reach a goal, use this situation to learn how to do better next time. Dont wallow in your failure.

When you feel good about yourself, you will have an easier time finding peace of mind. Peace is essential for happiness. If you constantly feel sad, you are living under a great weight that brings you down to a point where you could sink into a permanent state of self-pity. Self-pity only encourages negative thinking. Remember, you are not the only person facing rejection or hurt in life. There are other people much worse off than you are. People with negative thinking miss out on inner peace because they let every little setback throw them off track. They criticize themselves for no real reason and go down a road that only leads to misery.

Sometimes, hearing the word no is a good thing. If youve lost out on a job, maybe that is for the best. What if you had been awarded a job position only to find out that it was not what you really wanted, or that you could not do it as well as you thought? Of course, maybe you like being involved in situations that may lead you to harm. Maybe someone says no to you to keep you from hurting yourself. Maybe they say no because they love you.

Every life is full of rejection, so we would do well to turn our rejections into positive actions. Taking action can lead you to inner peace because activity makes you feel more positive about a situation. Positive attitudes result in peaceful states of mind. If you are feeling bad about yourself all the time, you need to break the cycle and get out of the habit of doing so. You can train your mind to think more positively. It will take work and effort, but it will lead you to inner peace, and this will be worthwhile.

Time Management Skills: Top 5 Ways to Improve Them

Time Management Skills: Top 5 Ways to Improve Them
By Pamela Catey

Do you feel like your time management skills are lacking? Feel overwhelmed, stressed, or like you are losing your life as each day quickly passes by?

In this article, I will share with you the top 5 ways to improve your time management skills to regain control of your life. There is a great quote by Business Philosopher Jim Rohn that says, Time is our most valuable asset, yet we tend to waste it, kill it, and spend it rather than invest it. Are you investing your time in things that are producing the results you desire? If not, read on.

Plan Your Day
Another great piece of wisdom from Jim Rohn is to never start your day until it is finished on paper. It is great advice. You can piddle away so much time when you are not focused on how you are going to spend it. Have you ever noticed how you can waste a whole day before you ever really started it? Plan it before you start it, and you will get more accomplished.

Prioritize
Are you clear about what your short-term, mid-term, and long term goals are? If not, get to work, eh? Every day is an opportunity to be taking action toward your short-term goal, which should be furthering your mid-term goal, which should be leading you down the road to achieving your long term goal. Taking even small actions on the things that matter will you give a sense of accomplishment and control.

Before You Go to Bed
Write down the 3 most important things to do tomorrow on a 3 x 5 index card. When you wake up in the morning, all you need to do is read your index card and schedule when you will do these 3 most important things. And of course, they should be in alignment with furthering your short term goal.

Be Relentless
Keep your eye on the prize. Stay focused on the objectives of the day until you have completed them. Be steady and persistent on the task at hand and only focus on one task at a time. When one is completed, focus fully on the next.

Value Your Time
No one will value your time as much as you do. So, it is vital that you relate to your time as the valuable asset that it is. Its only when you regard your time as valuable, that others will do so. It has to start with you first. It is your responsibility because we train people how to treat us. If you want other people to value your time, you have to value it first.

I hope these 5 ways to improve your time management skills proves valuable for you. Let me know your results, Id love to hear your wins!

Self Improvement and the Power of 'Why'

Self Improvement and the Power of 'Why'
By Garry Zancanaro

The first step to self Improvement and achieving any goal is to decide exactly what we want. If we are not totally clear about what we actually want it is impossible to make plans and take action to achieve it.

It is also vital to know WHY we want whatever it is we want, because its our whys that determine the strength of our desire, and our ultimate success in achieving our goals.

For example, say you have decided you want to save or raise $10,000 in the next six months for no reason in particular, expect perhaps that you are lousy at saving and you want to develop that ability.

Compare that to the why of parents who needs $10,000 within six months for a life saving operation for their only child? Which of these two whys is most likely to evoke the overwhelming desire and iron-willed determination to take the actions necessary for success?

This is not to suggest that goals will only be achieved if they are for altruistic reasons. We can achieve any honest goal we set for ourselves if we give ourselves a big enough reason to achieve it.

The least important part is the how. When we decide what we want, and our reasons for wanting it are strong and compelling to us, and we fully expect to succeed, the how will come to us. Our conscious and subconscious minds will focus on our goals, and what we spend most of our time thinking about we will attract into our lives.

This will allow us to make the plans and take the actions that will culminate in us reaching our goals. We will also become connected to the abundance of the universe. We will often be assisted by unexpected events and opportunities, or meet people that can help us. This doesnt mean we will reach our goals with little effort on our part - theres no doubt hard work and taking action are a critical part of the process. However, when we have a big enough why and focus on how it will feel when we achieve our goals, it often wont really feel like hard work.

If this sounds fanciful and too simple to be true, self improvement experts can explain the process in more detail and provide tools that will help us to harness these powers. The important thing to know is that in does work with compelling enough whys and total belief that we will succeed.

Self Improvement Quote of the Day:

A burning desire is the greatest motivator of every human action. The desire for success implants success consciousness which, in turn, creates a vigorous and ever-increasing habit of success. Paul J. Meyer

SelfImprovement Patterns of Jesus: 12 Secrets to Revolutionize Your Life Part III

Self-Improvement Patterns of Jesus: 12 Secrets to Revolutionize Your Life - Part III
By Paul Davis

Jesus of Nazareth was perhaps the greatest man, most loving individual and powerful leader of all time. His personal sacrifice and resurrection has brought countless people back to life from monumental setbacks, not to mention hell, death and the grave.

How can we model Jesus and implement His proven techniques in our own lives?

Here are 12 secrets to unlock your hidden potential, revolutionize your life and get you moving in victory en route to fulfilling your dreams.

Today we pick up where we left off from Part II and resume our revealing of the success secrets of Jesus.

8.Don't be distracted from your appointed destination and divine purpose.

Many are the devices of men and the enemy to divert us from our destiny, derail us from our purpose and distract us from that which is most important.

One thing Jesus did that assured His success and enabled Him to maintain His ongoing focus was to shut the door on distractions.

But you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have shut the door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which sees in secret shall reward thee openly. (Matthew 6:6)

Even our prayers can get distracted and be hindered if we don't shut the door on distractions. In order to patiently possess our own soul we must first shut out distractions.

When Jesus entered the ruler's house, he saw the flute players there. And he saw the noisy crowd. He said, Go away. The girl is not dead. She is sleeping. But they laughed at him. After the crowd had been sent outside, Jesus went in. He took the girl by the hand, and she got up. (Matthew 9:23-24)

Many times things crowding and bombarding against our mind and life need to be put out. We need to regain our clarity of focus and renew our minds. Upon doing so, we can access our greatness, step into the miraculuos and thereby manifest our best.

9.Master your Emotions

Jesus said, In your patience you possess your souls. (Luke 21:19)

Possessing your soul and all of its inner parts is vital to assure mental and emotional well-being. Your soul consists of your mind, will power and emotions. The emotions are the most colorful aspect of your personality. Yet simultaneously they can be the most turbulent and troubling if not regulated and restrained.

Jesus accessed all of His emotions and permitted them free expression. When His friend Lazarus died, Jesus wept. (John 11:35)

Jesus also knew when to see things from a higher perspective and thereby restrain His emotions.

When Mary stood outside the tomb weeping, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?

Mary supposed Him to be the gardener and did not recognize Jesus.

Suddenly Jesus said to her, Mary! She then turned and said to Him, Rabboni! (which is to say, Teacher). Jesus said to her, Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God. (John 20:11-17)

Sometimes our emotions cling to the wrong thing or person. It is in these circumstances that we need to be aware of and be mindful of God's higher purpose.

10.Harness and govern your bodily appetites.

The flesh if left unruled will lead your lustfully along a deadly path. Jesus recognized and told us The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. (Matthew 26:41)

As Christ allowed His own flesh to be crucified for humanity, soo too must we crucify our flesh and not permit it to gratify its hurtful lusts.

The apostle Paul said: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)

As we therefore embrace Christ's death so too can we then also enter into the power of His resurrection!

The more we subdue our flesh to the moving of the Holy Spirit within and through us, the greater will be the glory of God upon us. (Romans 8) A life full of God's glory is a life worth living! In the Presence of the Lord is fullness of joy! (Psalm 16:11)

Do We Need Daily Inspirational Quotes For Self Improvement?

Do We Need Daily Inspirational Quotes For Self Improvement?
By Robin OBrien

Many seek self-improvement and many like to receive a daily quote of inspiration as an aid to this aim. But, why do we like these sound bites? And do we need them? The answer lies somewhere in between.

It has been shown in numerous studies that language is required in order for a person to formulate ideas, to make plans and to dream: the poorer the language, the poorer the intellect. We need words in order to express ourselves. Without knowing a word for something we cannot begin to properly think about it. Imagine not knowing the word for love. How could you begin to explain to yourself, let alone anyone else, what love was. Also, we can expand on the idea of love if our vocabulary encompasses other words such as; like, desire, need, want, care for, affection, kinship, attraction, cherish and so forth. Knowing the word love we know what it is; knowing other words, we can begin to describe what it is and the many subtle forms of love. The more words you know, the more deeply you can think about a subject.

However, knowing words and their meaning isnt enough. We also need to know how to use them. In fact, this can pose a great challenge; to express exactly how we feel, what we know, what we desire, by stringing a few words together in such a way that we express the very essence of what we mean. Very few of us feel confident in expressing our own ideas because of our lack of skill in using words. It is this reason we admire writers for they, more than others, reflect mans true inner self. Nearly everyone, knowingly or not, has remembered at least one line of prose or verse from a writer, poet or songwriter. We remember these lines and hold them dearly.

So, when we are searching for self-improvement we can often turn to lines that have been given to us by writers. We turn to them to express a truth about our self, to understand something of our world. Famous quotes by some of the Worlds great writers can perfectly encapsulate a thought we have, an emotion were feeling or a truth we hold dear. Its not that we find the answer in a quote but our thoughts and convictions are bolstered by the words. They give us comfort and strength.

Some people can formulate ideas and express them precisely and concisely. And perhaps it is true that they dont need quotes from others who have gone before them. But they are few and far between. Most of us lack the skill. So, if you are addicted to your inspirational quote of the day, then dont let anyone tell you that it is a fatuous habit. Nearly all great writers have used or have been inspired by quotes of other writers.

Ill leave you with one of my favourite quotes:

There came a time when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. ~Anas Nin

Motivation and Success: Improved Techniques

Motivation and Success: Improved Techniques
By John Moore

Changing our internal programming that limits us has never been simpler or easier; we just expect it to be more complex! When we associate images or objects that provide a state of relaxation and joy we create a receptive environment for the unconscious mind to accept powerful motivation and successful results.

Founding Father of Autosuggestion:

In the late 19th and early 20th century Emile Coue (a chemist who became a hypnotist) experimented with autosuggestion techniques with great results.

He believed and showed that by using ones inner resources and imagination one could improve their life physically, mentally and spiritually.

The success he had curing patients with the affirmation below was nothing short of spectacular!

Day by day, in every way, I am getting better and better.

As a pharmacist he would encourage his patients to say this affirmation 20 times with a low voice, morning and evening, in a state of relaxation, like a litany.

He found the following immutable relationships (facts) that we have expanded:

A.When the will (conscious mind) and the imagination (unconscious mind) are antagonistic, it is always the imagination (unconscious mind) that wins, without exception.

This means, we cant override our passive unconscious beliefs with our conscious thoughts. Most of us think we can and we are what an illusion we are weaving!

B.In the conflict between the will (conscious mind) and the imagination (unconscious mind), the force of the imagination is in direct ratio to the square of the will.

This means, our unconscious minds beliefs are far more pervasive than we have ever understood, as the will (conscious mind) times the will (conscious mind) is a very strong force yet still only in ratio to the imagination (unconscious mind)!

We would have to constantly work ourselves into a huge state to override the unconscious mind consciously. Sometimes we can do this, though not often.

C.When the will (conscious mind) and the imagination (unconscious mind) are in agreement, one does not add to the other, but one is multiplied to the other.

What we already believe and know: unconscious and conscious, work very together very well in us. What we believe but dont know are antagonistic and cause most of our limitations.

D.The imagination (unconscious mind) can be directed.

Without this we would never be able to change, our limitations would rule supreme! With this we have a powerful tool for input to align our conscious and unconscious minds for amplification of our intention!

Current Advocates:

This information has been used in many walks of life since.

Renowned motivators like Anthony Robbins and others have used this information to instil success programming into the unconscious mind of students though the use of affirmations.

Many have also used the hype through our peak experiences to make it more thrilling and attractive. This can retrain the unconscious mind or imagination to a new belief that hype is required to enable change: a potentially exhausting proposition for the home based student!

Successful athletes program an anticipated winning performance and outcome for an event prior to their participation.

Movie producers lead our unconscious mind through a story to create an emotional reaction in us that we may not have experienced in real life.

Transforming it for Now:

We know that in a relaxed state we are more receptive to suggestion.

Want to convince someone of what you are saying? Use a technique that powerful motivational speakers use disarm the audience first by getting them to relax, either by stretching or by being humorous.

So what is the most effective way to multiply the will (conscious mind) by the imagination (unconscious mind)?

Be in a relaxed and joyful state. In this state we are the most receptive to suggestion.

To do this;

- Choose an affirmation that would change your life, if you could act as if it were true.

- Induce a state of relaxation, and,

- Give it a tremendous boost by associating it with joy, a state of our higher mind.

Emile Coue repeatedly stresses that in order for autosuggestion to work, efforts must not be made; the will (conscious mind) must not be used. Affirmation must be used effortlessly; otherwise we are using the conscious mind only and doomed to mediocre results!

Dolphins Alive:

My wife, Rosemary, and I have had many years experience coaching our clients to prosperity, leadership and living! One of the most effective methods we use is affirmations, with visual stimuli and higher mind states (joyfulness).

We want to share these results more widely and so set up a web site of dolphin gifts with affirmations. We have used dolphins, because of our universal relationship of joy through the magic they provide us, regardless of culture, religion or race. We have teamed this with powerful affirmations on our web site e store.

We hope that this provides not only a personalized experience but assists in effecting change in those aspiring to a greater life.

You may publish this article free of charge in your ezine, web site, ebook or print publication so long as the resource paragraph (at the end of the article) is included.

Do I Need This Self improvement Stuff?

Do I Need This Self improvement Stuff?
By Arun Pal Singh

It was long time back when I was still in my MBBS years. One of my friend was reading '7 Habits of Highly Succesful People'. He was quite impressed with the book and recommended that to me.

I do not need all this improvement stuff, I replied, I am quite content with the way I am.

As the time passed I could not help at introspection. Slowly my ego humbled and I found the flaws with myself. I was arrogant. I was poor at time management. I was hesitant to start a conversation. I never scheduled my goals. I was more emotional than practical.

I was always a good student. I was best in my school days. I was competitive. I did strive to do the best. But the very best was always determined by my surroundings. It is a different when you perform at local schoool level in a countryside school. But it is different when you compete at national level to enter into medical college.

I failed first time.

It was the first failure that I had encountered.

I did make it second time. I needed to study more. I did.

The MBBS is 5 and 1/2 years long course. The goal of pursuing postgraduation comes at the end of the course. Nothing stops one from early goal setting. But I said I was not that practical.

Another failure. Another push. I was into my postgraduation.

Postgraduation was totally different game. You are a doctor who is student at the same time. You need to interact a lot with the patients, colleagues, seniors, staffs, technicians.Suddenly you find that you need to improve upon yourself.

I looked for directions and help. I observed the successful & effective clinicians. I observed good and not so good surgeons and their habits.I imbibed and learnt.

Of course everything can be learnt. You need only to stress that fact upon yourself.

I learnt a very important fact.

One needs to be open in order to improve.

It was a kind of irony. I was open to learn from the surroundings but I was not ready to accept that a self improvement book can help me.

This kind of dualty had always existed as I analysed myself retrospectively.I had always responded to my surroundings but always shut my eyes whenever I had a chance to look beyond.

This needs to be resolved. This needs to solved.

Reluctantly I picked the book my friend recommended long time back. It was a good book.

It may sound ridiculous but as we grow up we start loving our weaknesses instead of mending them . We show our pride in them. Somehow we convince our minds that we are unique because of the qualities we possess. And when we say qualities we also mean our weaknesses.

But we hardly realize that.

How often have you heard these kind of statements-

I think with my heart.

I do not like to interact much. I am a kind of introvert.Who needs too much money. Why should I work more!

And so on

But somewhere in our minds each of us wants success. Each of us wants to get rich. Yet we keep on our deniak because it does not match our personality we have created for oursleves.

We want to achieve but we are not ready to follow the path success demands.I was blind as a goat when it comes to self improvement books.

I always believed nobody can teach you to become better. But at the same time I was learning from my available milieu. I was learning from somebody. Knowingly or unknowingly somebody was teaching me.

I was open to that idea but closed myself at the mention of the subject.

Slowly I have killed that irrational pride. I am an open person now.

One can learn from anywhereone wants. Same goes for self improvement stuff.

Moreover it is not the stuff that teaches us. It is we who learn from that stuff.

The world of today demands a lot of interpersonnel interaction. It is no more a place towered by eminence. The society today demands some basic qualities in order to achieve. Just one talent or quality cannot carry you for. You need to have a set of qualities.

Even if a reading can provoke single thought in our mind it is worth it.

How to Improve Your Memory and Never Forget a Face

How to Improve Your Memory and Never Forget a Face
By Jon Weaver

You are still in the company of your new acquaintance. Having applied Rule One successfully, you are positive you heard his name pronounced correctly, and you are conscientiously observing Rule Two, which means you are seizing every opportunity of saying his name aloud. Rule Three comes next, and you are to put it into effect at once: Fasten the Face in Your Mind.

The difference between the man with an excellent memory for faces and the man who constantly mistakes one person for another is not a matter of eyesight or of intelligence -- it is a difference in observation. The first man thinks about what he is seeing; the other does not. William P. Sheridan, one of the most celebrated detectives that ever operated in America, developed the camera eye to such an extent that he could pick out of a crowd any one of twenty-two thousand criminals whose pictures were on file with the New York police. His secret? He had schooled his mind to register every detail that his eye took in. He had learned to pay attention, to observe.

You can't get a definite picture of a man if you are thinking of anything else. You will never be able to remember faces as long as you are flustered at introductions, getting only a blurred impression of the face before you. It is absolutely necessary to forget yourself just for a few seconds to give all your attention to stamping a new portrait on your mind. It's easy for me to say, Don't be self-conscious, I know, and I also know that a voluntary attempt to forget oneself is one of the hardest things in the world to do. But here is a suggestion to you who so often miss new impressions out of sheer self-consciousness. You might look at it as an exercise in this third rule: Fasten the Face in Your Mind.

Go to the movies. It's dark there, and you can forget about yourself thoroughly as you scrutinize the faces on the screen. Analyze the appearances of the actors and actresses, giving particular attention to hair, eyes, ears, noses, mouths. Try to figure out the ages of the different characters, notice their height and their gait. When a close-up flashes on the screen, watch out for wrinkles, moles, and warts. Keep your ears wide open for the quality of the voices. For name practice, you might see if you can remember later what the actors were called in the play. Most of us know we saw Myrna Loy or Clark Gable in a particular picture, but we rarely remember the names of the characters they portrayed.

The beauty of this practice is that no one has to know what you are doing, and you alone may be the judge of your results. Students who have tried it have found that it has improved their powers of observation to the degree that they carried over the quickened interest into everyday life and were able to observe without any embarrassment the faces of people to whom they were introduced.

You might practice fastening faces in your mind while you are riding in a bus or subway. Glance at the person opposite you, look in a different direction, and try to reconstruct his face in your mind. As you grow more expert you will need less and less time to take in details of physiognomy.

You will become rapidly more proficient in taking in a person's entire appearance in a few glances as you continue to fasten faces in your mind. Your eye can take in a hundred details at once. It is your brain which needs training in realizing what the eye has seen.

Once you get the habit of concentrated observation you will take new notice of the differences between people. When you meet a man you will not be content with noting just that he is a fat man or a thin man, an old man or a young man. You will make a note of the color and quantity of his hair. You will jot down in your mental notebook whether his complexion is ruddy, swarthy, pallid, or tanned. You will pay sharp attention to peculiarities of his features, walk, manner, and voice. And so doing, you will effectively put into use Rule Three: Fasten the Face in Your Mind.

Dealing with Problems Finding Solutions and Self Improvement

Dealing with Problems, Finding Solutions and Self Improvement
By Garry Zancanaro

Problems, obstacles, disappointments, or whatever we like to call them, are a fact of life. Things simply do not always happen the way we want them to, or go according to plan. Everyone has to face and deal with problems throughout their lives. Being able to handle problems more effectively will make a great difference to our lives.

Many people become so tied up thinking and worrying about their problems, that they work themselves up into such a state that it can become impossible to see a way out.

Then there are some people that seem to sail through life and achieve great success and happiness, and never seem to encounter any real problems. Does this mean that these people are just lucky and things dont go wrong for them? Almost certainly not! More likely, they approach their problems in a different way to most people.

There are some simple things we can do that will help. The first thing to do is to stop thinking about the problem. It can be tempting to rehash every aspect of what happened and when, what you could have done differently, or why you did this instead of that, and so on and on. Its also easy to curse our bad luck or feel sorry for ourselves. But there is no doubt whatsoever that this will get us nowhere - we may even get us so bogged down that we become completely immobilised.

We must make the decision to learn from the experience, look for any positive aspects to be found, and move on. The sooner we do this the better, because then we can do what really matters concentrate on the solutions! This is by far the best way to deal with any problem. We must accept as a fact what has happened and then look for as many ways as possible to reach a solution.

Consulting a friend or colleague who can offer an impartial view may also help. Self improvement experts certainly offer more detailed techniques that can be applied to most problems, and will also help in other areas of our lives.

However, we can definitely help ourselves by making the conscious decision to focus on solutions rather than problems. This is like deciding to choose positive thinking over negativity, and looking forward with optimism rather than back.

How you think about a problem is more important than the problem itself - so always think positively. Norman Vincent Peale

Can Anyone Improve Their Reading Speed?

Can Anyone Improve Their Reading Speed?
By Melvin Ng

A question that is often asked of speed reading trainers is whether or not anyone can improve their reading speed. The simple, straightforward, answer to this question is yes, they can. However, this is not to say that the leaner will not have to provide some input of their own: after all, all learning is a form of trade-off. In this regard, the following are seen as the four essential elements that a student of speed reading will need to bring with them if they want to learn to speed read:

1. A desire to improve

Strange as it may seem, not everyone is willing to accept that there is a better method of reading than the one currently being used by the student. Most likely, the student has learnt their current reading method at a very formative age probably on their mothers knee. As a result, it can be hard to try and convince students to adapt to new methods of reading, a skill we see as so fundamental, none of us is really willing to accept that we do not know how to do it, and do it well, already. Therefore, a real desire to improve your reading speed is the first essential element youll need to bring with you to class.

2. A willingness to accept new ideas

Another concept that we learn in our formative years is to sound out our words (technically called subvocalize) as we read them. In part this is done so that we learn how to pronounce the word, not read it! However, in later life this habit can be extremely difficult to break. But, if you want to be able to improve your reading speed, it is a habit you will have to break.

In addition, most of are taught at some stage in our life that if we have not comprehended, or understood, what we have just read, to go back and reread the passage. Again, this is a habit which speed reading courses see as a no-no. You will have to discard it if you want to improve your reading speed. However, its not easy to do.Finally, whichever of the speed reading methodologies you select to learn, it is likely that youll need to learn to read large chunks of information at the same time, or to skim read. As children we are taught that these practices are not good for us we will likely miss information, or misinterpret it.

As you can see then, a willingness to accept new ideas is going to be essential if you want to learn to improve your reading speed.

3. Motivation

Although motivation may be considered similar to desire, the essential difference is that not only do you need to have the desire to learn, but you need to keep that desire for, potentially, a long period of time. In practice, learning the proper speed reading technique only takes a very short time. But the real test is in having to practice and practice everyday.

This means that a student of a speed reading course is going to need to maintain the motivation to learn how to improve their reading speed over a prolonged period. Indeed, some would argue that you never stop learning to improve your reading speed.

4. Practice

The adage is practice makes perfect, and nowhere is this adage more appropriate than in the reading learning process. Anyone who wishes to improve their reading speed is going to have to practice over prolonged periods.

Conclusion

To sum it up, if you want to learn how to improve your reading speed, all you is (i) desire; (ii) willingness; (iii) motivation; and (iv) practice.

Seven Ways to Improve the Results of Your Leadership Development Efforts

Seven Ways to Improve the Results of Your Leadership Development Efforts
By Kevin Eikenberry

Every day we deal with a variety of matters of urgent importance in our organizations. Seldom is leadership development on that urgent list. While perhaps not urgent, few things are of greater importance to the future of our organizations that the conscious and consistent development of our future leaders. Unfortunately, when we do put time and effort into leadership development, all too often those efforts fail.

In this article I will outline seven specific things you can do as an individual wanting to improve your leadership skills or when thinking about leadership development across an organization. Implementing any one of these suggestions will prove a valuable supplement to what you are already doing. Implementing most or all of them will yield or more confident, competent and prepared leaders than your existing development efforts by themselves ever will.

The Seven Suggestions

Create opportunities for self discovery and to create desire.

Learning anything successfully requires a motivated and interested learner. This is especially true for leadership. Often leaders see themselves as technical experts. In many cases they have been promoted because they were good at their previous jobs which may have had nothing to do with leading. Leaders need to understand how influential they are and know how they are doing, what the gaps are and have a desire to improve. 360 Feedback processes are one way to raise awareness and create a felt need for improvement. While they can be a powerful tool, the underlying purpose for their use is to create a clear desire for further development. However you accomplish this discovery and desire, it is critical to the development of greater leadership skills.

Set a goal / make a plan.

Leaders, either on their own or with assistance, need to set an improvement goal they need to have a clear picture of the areas they would like to develop. With a goal set, a plan can be put in place to move towards it. While this will often happen during a training event, this goal needs to be in place before attending any training to maximize the value of that training.

Focus on strengths.

Too often leaders build a plan based solely on improving areas of weakness. While we certainly want to improve in those areas, an equal amount of effort should be focused on enhancing and further developing areas of greatest strength. While there are several reasons for this, none are more compelling than the fact that less effort is required to improve an area of strength or natural talent than to achieve similar levels of improvement in an area of weakness.

Find ways to learn.

Leaders can be challenged to look for a wide variety of learning resources encourage them to look beyond the training workshops you might provide. Have them consider podcasts, websites, lectures, books, discussions with other leaders, finding mentors, working with a coach the list goes on and on. Once people begin to look, they will see many ways they can learn.

Find ways to practice.

Learning the ideas and knowledge is one thing, but to become a more effective leader people must practice. Encourage leaders to integrate what they have learned into practice. Help them see that there are opportunities to practice everywhere and not only at work. People will say they are busy and they are. Challenge them to consider their leadership development as a integrated part of their work among their most important tasks - rather than one more thing to do.

Get the leaders leader involved.

Leaders cant do it alone. Having the leaders leader involved will help keep development as an important priority, but beyond that, the leaders leader can provide coaching and help remove any obstacles that might be in the way. Most of all, the leaders leader can provide support and encouragement two things that are critical when we are learning (and practicing) new skills.

Build systems organizationally to support the other six suggestions.

We can do the six steps above as a motivated individual. But if we want to create a process for leadership development in our organization we have build ways to systematically provide people with the opportunities and options provided by the other six suggestions.

What is Missing?

Notice that the suggestions above dont talk about a training workshop, seminar or event as the key to your efforts. While you want any training you provide to be as useful and effective as possible, training alone can only get you so far -which is why your current efforts are less effective than youd like them to be. The seven suggestions above are meant to be an adjunct to your training efforts to be a process to layer on top of your existing efforts.

Training alone wont produce the leaders you need. It is one ingredient. The other seven suggestions in this article will, when added to a valuable, practical and effective training program, produce the leaders you desire and your organization needs.

Personality Easy Ways To Improve It

Personality - Easy Ways To Improve It
By CD Mohatta

Personality cannot be quantified. Personality can be perceived. Why we are delighted to hear somebody is beyond any scientific explanation. Similarly, why we love seeing some body walk is beyond any science. Personality is a mix of traits that gives a whole impression that can be either attractive or disturbing.

How to improve Personality? Since we judge people with their personality, it is important to find out why a person attracts while another creates negative vibes. Let us begin with posture. Watch yourself in the mirror. Are you keeping a straight body? Watch yourself walking. If you see somebody else walking like that, would you like that? If yes, great, otherwise find out what can be done for improvement. Go through all your normal body movements with a fine comb and bring necessary changes in them to make yourself more attractive.

How about your body maintenance? Do you keep your nails perfectly manicured? Do you look fresh at all the times? What about your hair? Are they healthy? Is your hairstyle enhancing your face value? What about mouth odor and body odor? Make a list and take care of all these aspects.

How about your talking? Your tone, your vocabulary, your choice of words, are they perfect? The way you make sentences, is that appealing? Can you make your voice sound inviting and attractive? Small additions and changes will slowly make big changes in your personality and make you a star.

Body Language: Improve Your Basic Interpersonal Communication Skill

Body Language: Improve Your Basic Interpersonal Communication Skill
By Lyndsay Swinton

Why do jade dealers wear dark glasses? No this isnt the start to a bad joke, its a serious question, with a telling answer. Jade dealers, and poker players alike, aim to hide what theyre really thinking and saying by suppressing their body language. Unless wheeling and dealing is your game, itd be wise to master the basic interpersonal communication skill of body language and be better understood.

93% of what you say remains unsaid

Stereotyping is short-hand decision making on whether you like someone and determines how you much effort you put into the conversation. Your hair colour, clothes, age, ethnicity and other features that dont change during a conversation, all add up to give an overall impression, which may be good or may be bad. The way you look speaks volumes - it's a communication skill in itself. So, start conveying a favourable message by getting your image right.

If it works for chameleons

Stereotypes can work to your advantage people who wear glasses are more intelligent right? So wear glasses to an interview. And people who wear revealing clothes are only out to find a mate and cant be taken seriously. (A quick expose - a recent study found that ovulating women expose more flesh than at other times in their cycle!). Learn from chameleons and change your appearance to fit your surroundings and your communication will be taken more seriously.

Eye to Eye Contact

We look less at people who make us uncomfortable. Conversely, when we are truly engaged in a conversation, we make loads of eye contact, making both parties feel interested and interesting. So, lift your gaze and make eye contact if you want your conversational partner to feel understood.

Okay, I dont mean intense starting thats just plain scary fix your gaze on the bridge of the nose and drop your gaze every now and again. If youre talking in a group, remember to include everyone in the conversation by scanning round and making eye contact with everyone.

Mirror and Match

Next time youre out at a restaurant or bar, take a look round and see how people sit when theyre in deep, intimate, conversation. Chances are they are sitting in very similar positions almost as if one were a mirror image of the other, matching posture and position.

To test your rapport building skills, strike up a conversation with a friend or foe, and see if you can mirror and then lead their movements. Take some time to mirror their body language if theyve got crossed legs, make sure your legs are crossed too. If they are bouncing their leg, maybe tap a pencil in time. Above all, be subtle its a delicate dance and no-one likes a partner who stomps over their party shoes.

After some time, do a mini assessment. Maybe scratch your nose if they follow by touching their face in response, you know youve hit the mirroring jackpot. If not, dont worry, just take some more time to build a deeper rapport.

In difficult or uncomfortable situations, most people worry about whats going to come out of their mouth. Truth is, get your body language right, and youve mastered the most basic interpersonal communication skill. And the other 7% will take care of itself.

Making Decisions is Essential for Self Improvement

Making Decisions is Essential for Self Improvement
By Garry Zancanaro

There is a massive difference between hoping or wishing for self improvement, or that something will change in our lives, and actively deciding to make changes in our lives.

New Year resolutions often fall into the wishing and hoping category. If we say Id like to give up smoking or I need to lose weight or I really should get fit or I should get a better job our chances of success arent great. Why not? The wording alone makes these more like a wish list of things that we think will make us happier if they happened. This is a bit like saying Id like to win the lottery and the very lack of conviction makes their odds of success pretty similar.

These are not decisions. Decisions are when we say to ourselves I am going to do whatever I have to do to lose 30 pounds in the next six months or I am not prepared to put up with my lousy job any longer. We need to decide that enough is enough and be absolutely serious that this is what we want. We need to be prepared get any information and help we need, form a plan and be prepared to take massive and consistent action. We need to be 100% committed to our decisions and be prepared to follow through whatever it takes.

Wherever we are in our lives now, it is due to the decision weve made in the past. It can also be due to the lack of decisions weve made. Many people drift through life with no real purpose or plans and never really make many, if any serious decisions.

If we want to make positive changes to our lives and have greater success and happiness, there are many self improvement books, audio programs, seminars and coaching programs that can help enormously.

However, the first step to making any change is making a decision, whether its to give up smoking or start that business youve been talking about for years.

We can have access to the best personal development tools available, but without having made the necessary decisions, little will change. But when we make firm decisions and know exactly what we want, we will find the strength and resources, and take the actions needed to succeed.

Self Improvement Tips Quote of the Day:

Vacillating people seldom succeed. Successful men and women are very careful in reaching their decisions, and very persistent and determined in action thereafter. - L. G. Elliott

Argue With Yourself And Improve Your Health

Argue With Yourself And Improve Your Health
By Dr. Tony Fiore

Even as a child, James was described by teachers and his parents as a happy optimist. As the story goes, one day his parents decided to play a joke on him and test his attitude by requiring him to spend an afternoon cleaning deserted stables at what had been a local racetrack.

Returning after two hours, James parents observed him singing while happily shoveling manure. Astounded, they walked closer, only to hear him saying to himself over and over, There has to be a pony in here somewhere.

James did naturally what researchers are increasingly discovering: optimistic thinking skills are a powerful antidote to anger partly because the optimist has better resistance to depression when bad events strike, better performance at work, better physical health and better relationships. Who couldnt admire and love a person with such a great attitude?

But what if you are not naturally optimistic? How can you become an optimist if you now insist on seeing the glass as half-empty instead of half-full?

The good news is that, according to psychologist Dr. Martin Seligman, optimism is a learned mental skill. As a past president of the American Psychological Association, he has plenty of research to back up his theory.

There are four ways to argue with yourself:

At its core, optimism is a style of interpreting events that occur in your world it is your personal theory or explanation of why both good things and bad things happen to you.

While everyone experiences both set-backs and victories in the normal course of life, optimists in contrast to pessimists have a very distinct style of explaining things to themselves.

Said another way, it is your belief about what happens to you that determines your reaction more than the event itself.

The knack of disputing your beliefs is a thought-skill, the mastery of which will morph you into the optimistic style of thinking. There are four ways to do this:

1.)Look at the evidence. According to Dr. Seligman, the most convincing way of disputing a negative belief is to show it is factually incorrect.

Most of the time you will have reality on your side. Your role is that of a detective as you ask, What is the evidence for my belief?

For example, is it really true that you never succeed in anything? (Very doubtful. Everybody succeeds some of the time.) That you are the worse parent you know? (Can you remember any success you had as a parent?)

That you are an incurable glutton? (Can you sometimes resist food?) That you are incredibly selfish? (How many times have you been unselfish?)

Using this skill of looking at the evidence, you can defeat pessimism with more accurate perception and recall of what is really true.

2.)Consider alternative causes. Most events in the world have more than one cause. Pessimists latch onto the most insidious; optimists tend more to give themselves a break.

For example, a marital breakup usually has many causes which probably contributed to its downfall. You can blame yourself. You can blame your partner. A more optimistic interpretation is that neither partner failed as an individual; it was the relationship (the combination) that failed.

3.)Put events into perspective. If the facts are not on your side and you cannot honestly see other causes to a negative event, you will need to look at the implications of your beliefs to become an optimistic thinker.

Is the event really as catastrophic as you may be making it in your mind? (Hint: few things are). Usually, the implications or long-term effects of your misfortune arent as awful or devastating as you may be seeing them.

4.)Is your belief useful? Even though a belief may, in fact, be true, it may not be useful. Some beliefs cause more grief than they are worth. You may tell yourself you are a failure, for instance. This belief will likely cause you to stop trying.

Instead, substitute a more useful belief like Just because I failed once doesnt make me a failure. Then behave accordingly with your new belief.

By learning to use optimism, you can manage anger and improve your health. These four steps will help you overcome your negative tendencies and have a more optimistic view of life.
