How You Can Improve Your Creativity What You Need to Know

How You Can Improve Your Creativity - What You Need to Know
By Royane Real

Would you like to enhance your creativity? Do you think that increased creativity is something that would improve your life?

Before you answer yes or no to that question, take some time to explore what the word creativity means to you.

If you think that creativity is something that you only need if youre an artist, while you happen to be a middle-manager in a corporation, you may decide that increased creativity is not really important to you. But creativity is actually something far broader than artistic expression, and its required in many areas of life.

Your idea of a creative person might be someone who lives in a loft, painting gigantic canvases all day long. Or perhaps a writer at her computer, working on a long novel. Or a musician, actor, or singer performing on stage to an audience. All these people are expressing themselves artistically, and they can all rightly be said to be creative people, even if no one else enjoys their art.

But what about an entrepreneur who has an idea for a new product, who forms a new company to produce and distribute it, eventually employing hundreds of people? Doesnt this also require creativity?

What about a research scientist toiling in a lab, developing new compounds in an effort to cure disease? Isnt this creative? What about a single mother who manages to come up with healthy delicious meals on a tiny budget? Isnt that creativity?

To one person, creativity can mean gluing seashells to a picture frame. To another, creativity might mean solving a grand unified theory in physics. And to another person, being creative might mean coming up with an ingenious new way to speed up a factory assembly line.

When we define creativity only in terms of artistic expression, we miss a lot of other potential applications for creative thinking and problem solving.

An artist painting a picture, or a writer working on a novel, both have something in common with the researcher in the lab, and the entrepreneur, and the person gluing seashells to picture frames.

They are all working on problems and devising solutions that didnt exist before. These people are using their minds to imagine fresh ways of doing something, putting together existing forms and ideas in new ways.

They may be creating a new idea, a new look, a new product, or new technique. Sometimes the ability to be more creative can lead to personal fame and fortune; sometimes it just provides a deep sense of personal satisfaction.

Can we improve our ability to be creative? Yes, in fact, learning to be more creative can be quite enjoyable and easy to do. Most of us were very creative as children, before we learned the official rules about how things are supposed to be. We can resurrect our ability to be more creative by exploring some of the many techniques that have been developed to improve creative and artistic ability, as well as to improve creative problem solving.

Some of the techniques that are used to improve creativity include brainstorming, mind-mapping, various forms of hypnosis and meditation, and guided imagery.

The techniques that have been developed to try enhance creativity all have one thing in common. They are all trying to bypass the inner judge or critic we have in our minds.

Most of us have an inner voice that is running a constant commentary on everything we think and do. We might barely notice this inner voice much of the time, yet it has a great impact on what we can accomplish in our life.

In many of us this inner voice is usually very negative. No matter what we want think about, or want to do, this inner voice is running like a tape in the background of our minds, criticizing our ideas, our performance, and our ability to be successful.

When we come up with a new idea, our inner voice may be saying, This idea is stupid. Or it might tell us, I should never be mediocre or average, I must be brilliant and perfect all the time. All my ideas should be totally brilliant and innovative. If my ideas arent perfect right from the start, I am a failure and its better not to even try.

Our negative inner critic does not always appear as a voice. Sometimes we see visual images of ourselves failing. Or we may have physical sensations of fear and embarrassment that stop us from pursuing new ideas or new actions.

Your inner critic isnt being evil when it criticizes you, or when it tells you your ideas are not very good. Your critic is actually trying to protect you from being ashamed or embarrassed by the potentially negative comments and reactions of other people to your ideas.

Our inner critic is trying to make us perfect and safe, but it can have an unforeseen damaging effect.

If our inner judgmental dialogue is mostly negative, our creative abilities will suffer.

Instead of helping us to come up with better ideas, this endless barrage of negative inner commentary will hurt our ability to come up with new ideas.

You cant be creative, and be critical at the same time. These two processes require different ways of thinking. The critical, judgmental, analytical function of the brain is not the part that knows how to generate creative ideas.

Even the types of brainwaves that you generate when you are being rational and analytical are quite different than the brainwaves that go with maximum creativity.

When its time for you to be creative, you have to send your inner critic out for a walk.

Why High Self Esteem and Self Improvement are Inseparable

Why High Self Esteem and Self Improvement are Inseparable
By Garry Zancanaro

Self Esteem is how we feel about ourselves, how much we like and respect ourselves.

It has been said that if we dont like ourselves it is impossible to really like, much less to love, anyone else. Liking and respecting ourselves is very different from vanity or narcissism, which at their most extreme, can become total self-absorption, selfishness and the inability to consider anyone elses viewpoint or feelings. To have healthy self esteem, on the other hand, is to be comfortable and confident within ourselves, with who we are as people.

Most people have their self doubts, and may be uncomfortable with some of their personality traits. The good news is that we can change almost any part of our personality if it is important to us and we are prepared to put in the necessary effort. This is actually what self improvement is all about, making positive change to our lives. Making changes requires commitment and can be difficult, but there are many valuable resources available that can provide great advice and guidance.

Self esteem is about how we feel on the inside, and how we feel inside will affect how we feel and act on the outside. Our self esteem determines our personality and character, and how we react to the experiences and challenges we face in our lives. It also affects our relationships and how we interact with everyone we come in contact with. And it certainly affects how successful and happy we are throughout our lives.

Having healthy self esteem is really about feeling comfortable and confident with ourselves as we are, and appreciating ourselves as human beings. Nobody is perfect, and self improvement is an ongoing journey. The very fact that we are making the effort to improve our lives will help us to feel better about ourselves and boost our self esteem and confidence.

Self Improvement and Overcoming Frustration

Self Improvement and Overcoming Frustration
By Garry Zancanaro

We all suffer from frustration, and being able to effectively deal with frustration is very important for self improvement. It can be a decisive factor between success and failure.

Frustration can have highly damaging impact on our frame of mind. It can turn a positive person into a negative person. It can inhibit our progress and, in the most extreme cases can completely immobilise us. We can become so wound up with our frustration that we cant think or act rationally, or we can even become aggressive. Our frustration can often exacerbate the situation and create a vicious circle. If we are convinced that our actions are not working, no matter how hard we try, we are much more likely to reduce, rather than increase, our chances of success.

There are countless causes of frustration, and what affects one person may have no impact on someone else

There are no simple answers or remedies. Some people simply give up on what they were trying to achieve. Some people walk away from the cause and go onto something else, and find they can then face the problem rationally when they come back to it. Stepping back from the cause of the frustration and making yourself calm down will help us to see things more clearly.

Persistence and determination can often see us through our frustration, particularly if we first make ourselves calm down. Movement can help - standing up and taking a few deep breathes, or going for a walk can help to clear our minds. Sometimes we may need to look for alternatives we hadnt considered before, or totally different approaches. There are times when we may be out of our depth, in which case we need to recognise this, and be prepared to ask for advice and support from specialists that can help us.

All successful people have to deal with plenty of frustration as they progress towards their goals, this may even be one of the biggest reasons for their success. Their frustration with their poor results or lack of success may have been so great they were driven to set goals and inspired to work hard at achieving them. They almost certainly learned strategies and techniques to deal with their frustrations, which allowed them to overcome their problems and be more productive, which definitely contributed to their success.

Self Improvement Books: Valuable Guides Or Dusty Doorstops?

Self Improvement Books: Valuable Guides Or Dusty Doorstops?
By James Allen

Quite often, when someone decides to make positive changes in their lifestyle and personality, the first thing they'll do is head for the nearest bookstore and start looking through the self improvement book section. Although their desire to become a better person is honorable, there are some things they should know before selecting a self improvement book to help them on their course. If you are one of these people, please read on.

First, not every one of these books is filled with advice that will be helpful for you. Sure, the cover may be flashy, the title intriquing and the write-up on the back may hold promises of the many secrets to be revealed within. Please don't fall prey to this type of gift-wrap marketing though. Take the time to actually crack open the book and read through the contents and a few random paragraphs or pages within.

Secondly, ask yourself if the course of self improvement being offered in the book is information that you already know. As you skim the book, you may find yourself agreeing with what the author is saying. That's a good sign that you already know this information. In this case, what you need to do is take action with the information you already have, not procrastinate by purchasing another book on the topic.

On the other hand, if you find yourself having lightbulbs go off in your head as you browse through the book and saying to yourself, Hey, I never thought of things that way!, you might be onto a good find. Self improvement books that make you think on your own and motivate you to take action on your new ideas are often a worthwhile investment.

Finally, if you do discover the perfect book, don't buy it right away. Being frugal is one of the first steps to self-improvement, so you might want to consider leaving the bookstore and checking your local library to see if the title is available for free. Another option is to comparison shop at online bookstores to get the best price available.

Keeping these book buying tips in mind will not only save you time and money, they may also help you further along your path to personal perfection.

A Big Improvement in 2006: Why Metaphors Work Better Than New Year's Resolutions

A Big Improvement in 2006: Why Metaphors Work Better Than New Year's Resolutions
By Christie Latona

Youre determined to begin exercising regularly. Starting January 1, youre going to keep your office organized and free of clutter. Or 2006 is going to be the year when you finally finish writing that screenplay or start working on your masters degree.

Hold that New Years Resolution!

If you really want to extinguish a bad habit or institute a good habit, what you might need most is a story. If you are serious about starting an ambitious new venture or winding up a project thats in limbo, what might serve you best is an analogy or allegory.

Thats the compelling thesis of The Playful Power of Metaphor: Harness the Winds of Creativity, Innovation and Possibility, a new book by Christie Latona and Janet Fox.

Theres often a gap between the plan and the pay-off, the authors contend, and just knowing what you need to do may not be enough to spur you to action. If youre stuck, for any reason, the best starting point might be to describe what the situation feels like. Maybe it feels like pushing a rock up a hill, or like being required to walk down naked down Main Street, or like uncovering a hornets nest. Whatever metaphor springs to mind can be expanded and used to understand the obstacles and illuminate options.

Latona and Fox, who both are consultants, coaches and group facilitators, also describe how to put on metaphorical hats to reframe challenges and problems, and tap into creative solutions. A childs beanie, for example, can break through the boredom of having been there, done that and seen it all. Metaphorically putting on a miners lighted helmet can help provided needed focus when the To Do list becomes overwhelming. A chefs tall white hat can keep the emphasis on working with whats at hand, rather than waiting for the perfect ingredients. Or that same hat could be a reminder that presentation makes many things more pleasing and palatable.

Published in November by Fun & Done Press, The Playful Power of Metaphor is packed with the examples, exercises and inventories to make it an effective self-coaching tool. At 54 pages and $10.95 , this book is what regular exercise, orderly offices, and completed screenplays often dont appear to be obviously do-able. The person who picks up and works through this little treasure trove will emerge with a new set of tactics for getting the hard things done, and even for making them fun.

The Playful Power of Metaphor is available for purchase on the web at www.christielatona.com .

Improve Your Small Talk Gain Big Dividends!

Improve Your Small Talk - Gain Big Dividends!
By Royane Real

Do you hate to make small talk? If so, you have lots of company.

You may find small talk irritating, predictable, mind-numbingly boring.

Yet, learning to play the small talk game can have lots of good benefits. You will have a much better chance of succeeding in making new friends, and advancing in your career if you can master the major art of making small talk.

Small talk is the name commonly given to the fairly predictable superficial chatter that makes up a large portion of our social encounters. Neighbors chatting over the fence, strangers speaking to each other in a grocery line, or workers talking at an office party will often engage in the exchange of fairly ritual, routine observations, comments and questions. Often there is no intent by either party to take the conversation to a deeper level.

Most of the comments and questions tend to be of a fairly trivial sort. For example, a person might say, I wonder when this heat wave will ever end, or Thats a nice dress, where did you get it? Other typical small talk dialogue might include basic questions like, What do you do? Or How long have you lived in this neighborhood?

Small talk often has a bad name. Many people dislike small talk, precisely because it is so mundane and trivial and predictable. It rarely touches on anything important. It does not lead you deeply into the soul of another. It is conservative and safe. You do not discuss really serious issues like world hunger, or the meaning of life, or the results of a recent scientific breakthrough.

People who are very intellectual or very shy, and those who are socially rebellious, are often unable or unwilling to engage in this sort of chatter, which they consider meaningless and trite. They long instead to have only intense, meaningful, and soulful exchanges about important matters.

If this is true of you, if you have had nothing but contempt for the very existence of small talk, if you look down with disdain on all who engage in it, it is time to consider revising your opinion. Small talk, however despicable, however clich, has an important role to play in initiating, developing, and deepening social connections with other human beings.

Think of small talk as the oil that lubricates the wheels of social interaction. If you see a person regularly, you can use small talk as a way to gradually learn more about each other. Small talk gives people a low-key, non-threatening way to exchange very basic bits of information with each other. Through these very tiny, safe, and clich exchanges that each person offers the other, you can find out what interests you have in common, and whether or not you like the character of the other person.

A complete inability or refusal to engage in small talk can severely limit the overall number of social relationships you develop. Refusing to engage in some form of small talk will send out the signal that you are not a friendly person, or that you think you are too good to talk with others.

On the other hand, the more often you engage in small talk encounters with others, the more likely it is that you will find people who want to move on to discuss some of the topics that are of more importance to you.

Instead of refusing to play the small talk game, why not really make a game out of it? Decide to practice small talk strictly for fun and give yourself points for starting it and keeping it going. Think of small talk as a skill you can develop, and practice working to become better at it. Do it everywhere, and do it often.

Becoming good at small talk will eventually pay off and give you even more opportunities to talk about those things that really matter to you. You can actually learn to enjoy the light hearted, low key, small talk process, and you may end up liking many of the other people you meet along the way!

Why Hypnosis Offers Only Temporary Results For Self Improvement

Why Hypnosis Offers Only Temporary Results For Self Improvement
By Nick Arrizza, M.D.

I was trained in therapeutic hypnosis and hypnoanalysis and used it in my medical practice for over 15 years. Initially it was extremely exciting to have such a wonderfully powerful modality to work with. Its mysterious and almost magical power was extremely seductive to me and to many of those clients who were drawn to it.

After working with individuals for this lengthy time however I came to the conclusion that whatever changes one may experience through the use of hypnosis they would be temporary at best.

After dealing with my disappointment at this realization I began to wonder why it, like many of the other powerful therapies I had trained in also, had limited efficacy over the long term.

Here's what I found.

Therapy, hypnosis included, has the primary goal of assisting clients in changing beliefs, emotions, perceptions and behaviors that are undesirable. Such negativity however is firmly justified and anchored within an individual by the life history (i.e. all the memories of all the incidents in their life) that that created it.

We all accept the presence of that life history within ourselves, think of it as who we are, justify it as a valuable learning experience, defend it afraid that if we lose it we might go crazy and so on.

In other words we are very reluctant to let it go.

So as long as it remains there inside you it continues to feed all of those negative beliefs, emotions, perceptions, behaviors on a daily basis, pure and simple.

So any attempt to stem the negativity that is spewed out by this subterranean life history is like trying to put out the fire in the mouth of a volcano by throwing in some water. It isn't going to work.

You have to extinguish the volcanic activity outright in order to truly be successful.

There-in lays the problem.

Most people don't want to release their life history from their mind or body.

Those who do likely believe that it is not even possible and hence give up trying.

I want you all to know that not only is it possible when its done effectively it can also be permanent.

The only process I know on this planet that can do this to date is one I developed 10 years ago called the Mind Resonance Process(TM) (MRP).

5 Tips to Improve ANY Performance

5 Tips to Improve ANY Performance
By Dr. Leif Smith

Seeking improved performance at work? Wishing you could finally achieve your sports-related goals? Merely looking for a way to get more out of everything you do? What follows are five basic skills (basic in that all top achievers know these skills and apply them in some form on a weekly basis) that will dramatically improve your performance.

1. Visualization

Some people are more visual learners than others, but most everybody can benefit from the utilization of applied visualization in their lives. It is important to understand, though, that visualization is NOT the same as daydreaming. Think of visualization as power daydreaming. The results you get from the two activities are drastically different, though their process may be similar. The four keys to visualization are:

A. Use all your senses- the more senses you bring in to your visualization experiences, the more real it becomes for your brain. Remember-the brain seeks to make the outside or external reality congruent with the inside reality. Make that inside reality one that is vivid.

B. Be clear- make certain your outcomes are clearly set in your visualization. Do you succeed? By how much? How well do you perform?

C. Be positive (in your outcomes)-this might seem like a no-brainer, but it is important to make certain that your visualization is always positive with regards to tone and outcome.

D. Do it often!-as it has been said, repetition is the mother of skill. The more you do something the right way, the better you become at it.

2. Goal Setting

Most people subscribe to a well-known method for setting goals: Choose a goal, and make a daily to-do list towards attainment of that goal. Dont do this. Most people fail in their goal setting for that very reason. Why? Life gets in the way! Daily tasks, crises, emergencies, etc. steal our time and leave nothing for achievement of our ambitions. Some ways to improve your goal setting abilities include:

A. Make certain your goals are in line with your dreams

B. Make sure that your goals inspire you (the get-out-of-bed-early test)

C. Invoke specific strategy (what you want to do) and planning (how you will do it)

D. Get your priorities straight, and get them on your schedule. Get them done first, before anything else.

E. Do these things on a weekly, not daily, basis.

3. Focus and Concentration

What is the difference between focus and concentration? I define focus in broad, behavioral terms. Focus is the center of our life interests and activities). Concentration is more narrow, and deals with cognition. It is the directed attention of mental activities toward a single point of reference.

So how can this help you? Understand that success requires a broad focus on a goal (outcome) with subsequent narrow attention to its attainment as time progresses. Geology, for example, teaches us great lessons about focus and concentration. Geology is merely the study of pressure and time. Given enough time and specific factors (focus), various geological formations are formed. Learn what geologists know: To achieve your goals, you will need to have a goal, and stay flexible in your approaches toward that end. Utilize concentration when specific instances occur in your life that will lead you closer to your goal.

4. Mental Toughness

Mental toughness is not what you think it is. Mental toughness is simple to define and difficult to execute (or everybody would be tough). Here are the keys:

A. Resiliency (the ability to bounce back)

B. Optimism (the ability to see the good in situations and events)

C. Proactive (the ability to act upon your environment)

Resiliency is important because everybody fails. The higher up you go in life, the more chances you will have had to fail. What is important, however, is how you respond to lifes inevitable obstacles and potholes. Optimism is simply a better choice than pessimism, as it leads to hope rather than despair. There is always a positive lean on a situation if you are willing to look hard and long enough. Finally, being proactive puts you in the drivers seat to achieving your goals, as you are not at the mercy of your environment. Act or be acted upon.

5. Perspective

Perspective is the key to mental health. It allows for proper life balance, and allows for simultaneous realism and optimism. To get a better sense of perspective, realize that there are only three things in life that you can truly control: Your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Focus your energy on those three things. Monitor what you allow yourself to think about and focus on. Doing so will allow you to gain true perspective, which is always grounded in reality, but hints of better things to come.

Why Overcoming Conditioned Beliefs is Vital to Self Improvement and Success

Why Overcoming Conditioned Beliefs is Vital to Self Improvement and Success
By Garry Zancanaro

Many people who are serious about self improvement and making positive changes have difficulty making the progress and getting the results they desire.

There can be many reasons for this, but one common problem is that some people have become so conditioned in their thinking that, although they want success, their deeply held beliefs and conditioning can actually sabotage their best efforts.

The environment that we grow up in, and the influences we are exposed to as children have a huge impact on our thinking, even if we arent aware of it. The opinions of our parents, family and friends affect our beliefs and expectations, as do countless other sources such as education, religion, television, films, newspapers, radio and much more.

If we grow up in an environment where money is always scarce and making ends meet is a constant battle, we can easily come to believe that this is the way of the world. We may seriously desire much greater success, but at a subconscious level, we can actually hold ourselves back by impose self limiting beliefs and expectations on ourselves.

The media only compounds these beliefs. How many films are there featuring stereotypes such as poor but honest and hard working folk who have been used and abused in some way by the rich and corrupt millionaire? Everyone loves an underdog and these stories can be very entertaining, but they also reinforce the belief that financial success and sound moral values are mutually exclusive.

There are many resources available from Self Improvement Experts to help overcome any self limiting beliefs that can hold us back. Facing up to and overcoming our conditioned beliefs can be one of the most important actions we ever take for our success and happiness.
